The FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023, which is taking place in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar and Rourkela from January 13 to 29, has 16 of the world’s best teams competing for the coveted crown. Out of all the teams, competing Germany and Belgium made it to the final for the chance of absolute glory of becoming the best of the best.
In the first semi-final, Germany advanced to the final of the FIH Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup after defeating Australia 4-3 in the first semifinal match at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday, thanks to a superb hat-trick by their top player Gonzalo Peillat. While Gonzalo Peillat scored three goals, Germany’s Wellen Niklas added another in the 59th minute. Jeremy Hayward, Ephraums Nathan, and Blake Govers all scored for Australia. The opening quarter was controlled by the Australians, who had been in excellent form throughout the competition. They began with an aggressive impulse, leaving little room for the Germans. Germans fought their way back into the game to some extent in the second quarter. However, the second half was dominated by Germany.
Defending champions Belgium defeated runners-up Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout in the second semi-final to set up a showdown with Germany. Belgium and the Netherlands were knotted at 2-2 in regular time at the Kalinga Stadium. The match between Belgium, the oldest squad, and a youthful Dutch team was well contested, but the more experienced reigning champions won the shootout.
