The Minnesota Golden Gophers aim to add a sixth NCAA championship to the illustrious history of their athletic program. After winning back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003, Minnesota missed the opportunity to win in the national tournament.
In the meantime, the Bobcats have yet to have a single Frozen Four championship to their name. In the championship game in 2013, Quinnipiac was defeated by Yale. Two years later, in 2016, they were defeated by North Dakota in the same manner.
The University of Minnesota advanced to the national championship game on Thursday by claiming a 6-2 victory over Boston University in the semifinal matchup of the tournament. Luke Mittelstadt, a defenseman for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, broke a 2-2 tie in the third period by scoring two goals in less than two minutes. This ultimately led to the team’s victory.
The final score of Quinnipiac’s quarterfinal match against Michigan was 5-2 in favor of the former. Jacob Quillan, a forward for the Bobcats, scored twice to help the team advance to the national championship game for the third time in the last ten years.
The two hockey programs have never faced off against one another more than twice in the history. The lone contest, which took place in 2000, was won by Minnesota by a score of 11-2.
