The 2023 NCAA Women’s Tournament has reached the Elite Eight, and this weekend at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, teams are competing to advance to the Final Four. The first two national quarterfinal matches occurred on March 26 on Sunday, while the last two will be on March 27 on Monday.
The four regional finals will be held in two cities, one at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and the other at Climate Promise Arena in Seattle, Washington. The Greenville Regional 2 and Seattle Regional 4 finals will be played on Sunday, and the Greenville Regional 1 and Seattle Regional 3 finals will be played on Monday.
A showcase starring two of the greatest names in women’s college basketball appeared likely as the brackets were made public.
Then Virginia Tech and Ohio State went and dashed any last-ditch Final Four chances that could have existed between UConn and Tennessee.
Instead, the last position in Dallas will be decided by the matchup between the top-seeded Hokies (30-4) and the third-seeded Buckeyes (28-7) on Monday night.

FAMILIAR COMMODITY
With 23 points, including 18 in the first half when the Buckeyes established a 10-point lead at the break, Ohio State freshman Cotie McMahon shone in the Buckeyes’ victory against UConn. McMahon, who was the Big Ten’s rookie of the year, has double-digit points in 15 of Ohio State’s last 17 games.
By participating in her high school career around an hour from Columbus, she was a recognized star to McGuff. McMahon’s skill was also known to Brooks and a special assistant.
“I have a 17-year-old daughter and once a year I’ll take her in the summertime and let her tag along with me on a recruiting trip. And one of these ones we happened to sit down and watch Cotie. And she doesn’t really know people’s names, but she knows Cotie McMahon’s name,” Brooks said. “And we’ve been watching them during the year, and she’s like, ‘There’s that Cotie girl.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s that Cotie girl. She’s really good.’ And now all of a sudden we’re facing her.”
RESPONSE TO PRESSURE
In the fourth quarter, Virginia Tech had trouble containing Tennessee’s full-court pressure. When the Hokies relaxed and took command in the last seconds, the Lady Vols used the press to cut an 18-point lead down to 53-52.
The pressure Ohio State will use against Virginia Tech with its full-court press was foreshadowed by the Lady Vols.
“I think the whole ACC teams, Duke, Louisville, Miami, they’re all aggressive styles and they all pressed at some points in the game,” Virginia Tech’s Cayla King said. “So playing those teams throughout the year and the ACC tournament I think has prepared us some for this.”
Ohio State vs. Virginia Tech Prediction:
Ohio State 68, Virginia Tech 71
