The top two men from last season, Nathan Chen and Vincent Zhou are not competing this year and might not continue at all. The top two women, Alysa Liu and Mariah Bell retired. The best ice dance team, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, also participated. The national pairs winners from the previous year, Ashley Cain and Timothy LeDuc, also quit the sport. As a result, no one of the four disciplines at the U.S. Championships has a reigning national champion since 1993.

The featured skater is Ilia Malinin, an 18-year-old from Virginia who made history by landing the first quadruple Axel at all four of his tournaments this season. He has the second-best total score in the globe, 38.28 points more than the next American (Camden Pulkinen). The only Olympian in the men’s field, Jason Brown, is taking part for the first time since finishing sixth in the Games.
