The United States Baseball team reached the final yesterday to defeat Cuba, 14-2, on Sunday night in Miami. Tonight Japan will face Mexico for World Baseball Classic 2nd semifinal game at 7 PM ET. Total of 20 national baseball teams are set to face each other this month, in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) 2023. News of the 5th edition of this promising tournament was met with great enthusiasm from baseball fanatics throughout the globe. This year’s hosting rights have been awarded to Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. The event was supposed to be held in 2021 but was pushed a year further into the time after the calamitous Covid-19 pandemic decided to show up.

The 16 teams that took part in the 2017 World Baseball Classic automatically secured a birth at this year’s event. Qualifiers for the remaining 4 positions were held from 16 September 2022 to 5 October 2022 after consultation with the Major League Baseball (MLB) and Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA). The Czech Republic, Great Britain, Nicaragua, and Panama managed to qualify for the main event.

The defending champions, the United States, are again looking to bag the World Baseball Classic trophy. Standing in their way is Japan, a two-time winner of WBC and the number 1 team according to WBSC world rankings. Both these teams are closely followed by the Dominican Republic, which, although occupying the number 9 position in the WBSC ranking list, is a champion of the 2013 WBC tournament.
