WASHINGTON — The Biden administration is planning to announce military aid for Israel amid its war against Hamas in Gaza, a source told Fwrd Axis.
The news comes less than 24 hours after Hamas militants fired missiles from Gaza into Israel, killing over 300 and injuring thousands.
“The U.S. Embassy is aware that there have been casualties as a result of these incidents. U.S. citizens are reminded to remain vigilant and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness as security incidents, including mortar and rocket fire, often take place without warning,” the embassy said in the statement.
Israel is expected to respond in a counter-offensive in Gaza which could require additional U.S. military assistance. The White House said Saturday that President Joe Biden spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, condemning the attack while offering U.S. assistance.
“I made clear to Prime Minister Netanyahu that we stand ready to offer all appropriate means of support to the Government and people of Israel,” the statement said.
Later in the day, Biden gave brief remarks in the East Room, saying Israel has the full support of the United States.
“There is never a justification for terrorist attacks and my administration’s support for Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering,” he said.
A senior U.S. official held a phone call with reporters, saying there is concern the drama among House Republicans could halt any future aid to the region.
The House is currently not in session after Kevin McCarthy was ousted as speaker last week, leaving the chamber in a standstill.
“Congress will definitely have a role, and without a speaker, this could be a problem,” the U.S. official said.
A senior Israeli official said Netanyahu wants emergency U.S. funding and Biden is open to that funding but one question remains how much time will pass until a new speaker is chosen and if that new speaker will be open to funds to Israel.
“We’ll make sure they have the help their citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves,” Biden said Saturday at the White House.
