Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has tested positive for Covid-19, his office confirmed in a statement late Tuesday afternoon.

“Governor Abbott is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, in good health, and currently experiencing no symptoms,” Mark Miner, the governor’s communications director, said. “Everyone that the Governor has been in close contact with today has been notified. Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott tested negative.”

The news comes just one day after Abbott attended an event without a mask in a crowded room.

Abbott issued an executive order last month banning vaccination and mask mandates as Covid cases rose in Texas despite push back from school districts in San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas.

The Texas Supreme Court recently overruled the local officials, keeping Abbott’s mask mandate in place.

Abbott told those close to him he has received a third booster dose of the vaccine but his office did not respond when requested for comment.

The Biden administration is expected to recommend most Americans who are eligible should get a booster Covid-19 shot eight months after being fully vaccinated. Officials say an announcement could come as soon as tomorrow.

Miner’s statement said Abbott tested positive after undergoing routine testing and received Regeneron’s antibody testing.

“Governor Abbott is in constant communication with his staff, agency heads, and government officials to ensure that state government continues to operate smoothly and efficiently,” Miner said. “The Governor will isolate in the Governor’s Mansion and continue to test daily. Governor Abbott is receiving Regeneron’s monoclonal antibody treatment.”

Texas had a total of 144 Covid-related deaths this past Saturday and has averaged over 80 deaths over the last seven days, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Abbott also sent in a request to the federal government for five mortuary trailers from the federal government in anticipation of an uptick in deaths.
