The U.S. economy added 216,000 jobs in December, closing out 2023 strong and beating expectations set by economists, the Labor Department said Friday.

The unemployment rate held at 3.7% while payroll gained from November’s figure of 173,000. Economists had been expecting the unemployment rate to increase to 3.8%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
