(Fwrd Axis) — With Big Brother set to return in Australia in 2022, the same cannot be said for its celebrity spinoff after Channel 7 has confirmed it will not continue with Big Brother VIP this year.
Channel 7 confirmed to TV Tonight that the celebrity spinoff will not return in 2022. The series averaged a dismal 330,000 viewers in overnight ratings, bombing with the Australian public.
U.K. channel E4 recently announced it would be airing Big Brother VIP later this month, prompting fears among loyal Big Brother UK fans the show would return with the controversial Australian format.
The civilian version of Big Brother will return later this year, which will feature returning contestants from Channel 9 and Channel 10 era of the show.
It’s mainly new contestants with a scattering of some of the most iconic Big Brother housemates mixed in,” Channel 7 Director of Scheduling Brook Hall said. “Big Brother is our most demographically rich show. It’s very young, obviously great for 7plus.”
Hall also hinted at format changes to the upcoming series after complaints from fans about the repetitive and ‘segment’ format to the show.
“It won’t be as formulaic as ‘Here comes the challenge, the eviction segment.’ There’ll be nomination nights, task nights, it will be broken up,” he said. “We want to make sure there’s some fun in there.”
