House Speaker Mike Johnson met with former President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida on Monday night, sources familiar with the matter told Fwrd Axis.
The meeting comes after Johnson endorsed Trump last week, breaking with former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who refused to back a candidate in the GOP primary.
“I’m all in for President Trump,” Johnson said last week. “I expect he’ll be our nominee. He’s going to win it and we have to make [President Joe] Biden a one-term president.”
Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, was at Mar-a-Lago attending a fundraiser for Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL). The meeting was first reported by Punchbowl News.
Trump backed Johnson on Truth Social when he was running for the speakership, saying at the time that Republicans needed to get the job done.
“My strong SUGGESTION is to go with the leading candidate, Mike Johnson, & GET IT DONE, FAST!,” Trump wrote.
However, Johnson’s endorsement comes after The New York Times reported last week that in 2015, Johnson wrote on Facebook that he believed Trump “lacks the character and the moral center we desperately need again in the White House”.
Johnson’s meeting at Mar-a-Lago only underscores the support Trump has among Republicans as he is the leading candidate to secure the GOP presidential nomination next year.
