American singer Macy Gray was branded a “sore loser” by viewers of The Masked Singer after she stormed off stage following her elimination on the U.K. edition of the celebrity singing competition.

Gray – disguised as ‘Toad in the Hole’ – was sent packing by the studio audience after going head-to-head with ‘Bear’ in the sing-off. Following the judges decision to save ‘Bear’, Gray — still masked as ‘Toad’ — opted to leave the stage quickly.

Eventually, ‘Toad’ returned to the stage to join host Joel Dommett and was unmasked, revealed as Gray. The “I Try” singer was clearly upset and frustrated with her elimination, offering just one-word answers to Dommett’s questions.

“Did you have fun on the show?” Dommett asked Gray.

“Yeah,” she replied with little enthusiasm.

“You know, I’ve been singing for a long time,” Gray said, “and now I’m a toad.”

The Sun reported on Sunday that producers were backstage with Gray for nearly an hour, trying to convince her to return to the stage. This was not seen in the final edit on Saturday’s broadcast.

Gray appeared on season 3 of the Australian version of the show, making it to episode six. She previously reached the final of the US version of the show in 2023, which reportedly left her shocked that she was eliminated early on the current series of the British version.

“Macy was almost shellshocked to start with and was basically gutted to be out so early because she really enjoyed being on the American version – when obviously she did brilliantly – so was totally blindsided,” a insider told The Sun.

“When Macy stormed off stage everyone was frozen in shock but as soon as she reached backstage, crew removed her mask so they could talk her down,” they added.

Dommett defended the judges’ decision in a recent interview on BBC Radio 2, saying, “The case with Macy is she is a legend, she has a recognizable voice, and she might as well go because we all know it is her, and they put the other person through because we still don’t know who they are.”

The Masked Singer UK airs Saturdays on ITV and ITVX.
