Microsoft Warns SolarWinds Hackers Are Targeting 150 Organizations

Microsoft warns the Russian-based hacking group is targeting government agencies.

The Russian-based group behind the SolarWinds hack is has launched a campaign and is targeting government agencies, Microsoft has warned.

Microsoft refers to the group as Nobelium and is believed to be run by Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service. According to Microsoft, the group launched the attack to gain access to an email marketing service used by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

“These attacks appear to be a continuation of multiple efforts by Nobelium to target government agencies involved in foreign policy as part of intelligence gathering efforts,” Tom Burt, Microsoft vice president of customer security and trust, wrote in a blog post on Friday morning.

The new campaign targeted 3,000 email accounts across 150 organizations.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
