Report: Spurs To Waive Guard Cameron Payne

Payne averaged 10.3 points and 4.5 assists in 48 games for the Suns last season.

The San Antonio Spurs are waiving veteran guard Cameron Payne just two months after acquiring him in a trade with the Phoenix Suns, according to ESPN.

The Story: The Spurs acquired Payne along with $5.6 million from the Suns in July in exchange for a future second-round pick.

  • Payne averaged 10.3 points and 4.5 assists in 48 games for the Suns last season.
  • Payne had a 31-point performance in Game 6 of the 2023 Western Conference semifinals against the Denver Nuggets.
  • With San Antonio building around their young core, Payne will have a better chance on a contending team.

Missing old friends: The move comes just a month after he made comments on social media, saying he wished he was still with the Suns.

  • “I wish I was in Phoenix still,” Payne said. “It is what it is, they’re trying to win the ‘chip, and I respect it. I feel like they could’ve won the ‘chip with me, though.”

The Spurs will need to waive or trade two more players before the start of the 2023-24 regular season.
