The Kremlin announced Monday that Kim Jong Un will travel to Russia to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid concerns the North Korean leader will provide military support for Russia in its ongoing war with Ukraine.
The Kremlin said the visit would happen in “the coming days” while the North Korean state news also reported that Kim would be visiting Russia “soon”.
“During the visit the comrade Kim Jong Un will be meeting comrade Putin and hold a summit,” KCNA reported.
The news comes just a week after the United States said North Korea and Russia have been discussing an arms deal, raising concerns Kim could provide weapons to the Russians.
“We have information that Kim Jong Un expects these discussions to continue, to include leader-level diplomatic engagement in Russia,” National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement.
“We have nothing to say on this topic,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a news briefing last week in response to the report.
Russian state media reported Monday that Putin arrived in Vladivostok, which is nearly 500 miles from northeast of Pyongyang, to take part in Russia’s Eastern Economic Forum.
