REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — President Joe Biden condemned the assassination attempt against Donald Trump at his Pennsylvania rally with brief remarks on Saturday evening.
Speaking from Delaware, Biden condemned the violence and said he is trying to get ahold of Trump, hoping to speak with him later in the evening.
“I’ve been thoroughly briefed by all the agencies in the federal government as to the situation based on what we know now,” Biden told reporters. “I have tried to get a hold of Donald, he’s with his doctors. Apparently, he’s doing well. I plan on talking to him shortly.”
“Look, there’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. It’s sick,” he added. “It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this.”
Six minutes into his remarks, Trump reached for the side of his face as popping sounds rang out. Secret Service quickly huddled around the former president for several minutes. Trump raised a fist into the air as blood was streaming down his face before he was quickly escorted into a vehicle, walking off the stage with agents on all sides.
According to three senior U.S. officials, the shots were fired from outside the event and out of range of U.S. Secret Service security perimeter.
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said that the former president “thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act.”
Biden was at church in Delaware when the shooting occured and was briefed on the situation by Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall.
Donald Trump Jr. said his father was in “good spirits” and was released from the hospital.
The Biden campaign said in a statement they are halting all television ads amid the investigation.
“The Biden campaign is pausing all outbound communications and working to pull down our television ads as quickly as possible,” a campaign spokesman said.
Former President Bill Clinton released a statement on X stating “Violence has no place in America.”
