Former President Donald Trump has been informed that he is the target of an ongoing investigation related to his handling of classified documents, several sources familiar with the matter have confirmed to Fwrd Axis News.
Trump received a letter from special counsel Jack Smith’s office, which is a routine practice to put the subject on notice that they are facing the prospect of indictment.
According to Department of Justice guidelines, “the prosecutor, in appropriate cases, is encouraged to notify such person a reasonable time before seeking an indictment in order to afford him or her an opportunity to testify before the grand jury.”
Trump lashed out at the news on social media, repeating his innocence in the matter.
“I’ve done NOTHING wrong, but I have assumed for years that I am a Target of the WEAPONIZED DOJ & FBI,” he wrote.
Last month, Trump’s legal team requested a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland amid fears of a possible indictment regarding Trump’s alleged efforts to retain classified materials after leaving office.
Smith is also investigating Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Trump spoke with New York Times’ Maggie Haberman on Wednesday but would not say whether he had been told he was a target in the special counsel’s investigation. He did say he was not told he is getting indicted.
The Independent reported Wednesday that federal prosecutors are preparing to ask a D.C. grand jury to indict Trump on charges of violating the Espionage Act and for obstruction of justice as soon as Thursday. The grand jury could also be asked to indict the former president for violating a portion of the U.S. criminal code Section 793, which prohibits “gathering, transmitting or losing” any “information respecting the national defense”.
The news comes after former Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows provided testimony to the grand jury for over four hours. The Independent reported Meadows is said to be cooperating with the investigations in exchange for pleading guilty to unspecified charges. In return, Meadows will receive limited immunity.
