President Joe Biden on Thursday said the United States is looking to seek a prisoner swap between the U.S. and Russia to bring Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich home.
The Story: Speaking at a press conference in Finland, Biden said he is open to bringing Gershkovich and any American that has been wrongly detained in Russia home.
- I’m serious about a prisoner exchange. I’m serious about doing all we can to free Americans being illegally held in Russia or anywhere else for that matter,” Biden said.
- “The process is underway,” he added.
- The Associated Press reported earlier this month that Russia would be open to a prisoner exchange for Gershkovich.
- The news comes after national security adviser Jake Sullivan said last week the talks have been ongoing with the Kremlin but talks have “not produced a clear pathway to a resolution.”
What it means: Gershkovich has been detained for over 100 days at Moscow’s Lefortovo prison.
