(Fwrd Axis) — The January 6 select committee says it has evidence that former President Donald Trump was part of a “criminal conspiracy” to overturn the 2020 presidential election, the committee said in a court filing late Wednesday night.
The filing says it has evidence that Trump violated multiple laws by attempting to prevent Congress from certifying his election loss to Joe Biden.
“The Select Committee also has a good-faith basis for concluding that the President and members of his Campaign engaged in a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States,” the committee wrote.
Among the release, included deposition excerpts from aides to Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence. All pointing to the same story: The then-President was informed repeatedly that he lost the election and that his claims of fraud were proven to be false. He then rejected those claims and continued to mislead the American people about the fairness of the election.
The move comes as the select committee is attempting to get a judge to force John Eastman, a right-wing lawyer who had a hand in helping Trump with the plot, to produce crucial emails tying together the details of the plan.
Chair Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) and Vice-Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) released a statement late Wednesday, saying Eastman’s emails may provide further proof of Trump’s involvement.
“The facts we’ve gathered strongly suggest that Dr. Eastman’s emails may show that he helped Donald Trump advance a corrupt scheme to obstruct the counting of electoral college ballots and a conspiracy to impede the transfer of power,” the joint statement read.
Trump and Eastman have not been charged with any crime. A Trump spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
Thompson said last week that the panel had interviewed more than 550 witnesses.
This is a developing story and will be updated with more information.
