Hunter Biden was indicted on nine tax-related charges, including three felony counts, according to documents filed Thursday.
The indictment detailed how President Joe Biden’s son allegedly failed to pay taxes, failed to file, evaded an assessment, and filed a fraudulent form.
The charges, which include six misdemeanor tax offenses, were brought by special counsel David Weiss. If convicted, Hunter Biden faces up to 17 years in prison.
“According to the indictment, Hunter Biden engaged in a four-year scheme in which he chose not to pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019 and to evade the assessment of taxes for the tax year 2018 when he filed false returns,” Weiss’ office said in a news release.
The news of the latest indictment comes months after Hunter Biden was indicted on charges of possession of a gun while using narcotics. Two of the counts include allegations Biden completed a form indicating he was not using illegal drugs when he purchased a gun while the other alleges he possessed a firearm while using a narcotic.
Hunter Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell responded to the charges in a statement, saying, that if the president’s son’s “last name was anything other than Biden, the charges in Delaware, and now California, would not have been brought.”
“I wrote U.S. Attorney Weiss days ago seeking a customary meeting to discuss this investigation. The response was media leaks today that these charges were being filed,” said Lowell.
“All these issues will now be addressed in various courts, the first to occur this Monday when the prosecutors knew our motions to dismiss their first set of questionable charges would be filed,” Lowell added.
The indictment alleges that Hunter Biden earned millions of dollars from foreign dealings in Ukraine, Romania, and China and “spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle at the same time he chose not to pay his taxes.”
“Between 2016 and October 15, 2020, the Defendant spent this money on drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature, in short, everything but his taxes,” the indictment says.
The White House declined to comment on the charges.
