AOC Calls Out Democrats’ Insider Trading In ‘The Weekly Show’ Interview

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) recently joined Jon Stewart on The Weekly Show, where she didn’t hold back in calling out the hypocrisy she sees in Congress—particularly among her own party—when it comes to insider trading. During their conversation, Ocasio-Cortez pushed for a ban on lawmakers owning stock, underscoring the need for greater accountability within the system.

“There needs to be Democrats who walk the walk and talk the talk,” Ocasio-Cortez said, emphasizing that the hypocrisy within the party is a major problem.

“There is an insane amount of hypocrisy, and the hypocrisy is what gets exploited. Whenever there’s a hypocritical window, that’s where the cynicism comes in.”

She pointed to insider trading as one of the most glaring examples of this double standard in action.

The conversation quickly turned to the widespread calls for a ban on lawmakers trading stocks, a topic that has gained traction as more high-profile figures, like Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), have come under fire for the stock trades made by themselves or their families.

Ocasio-Cortez shared her frustration, saying, “It’s so crazy. I mean, like, it’s the end of the thing. Like, people think that everyday people are stupid. I’m like, ‘Do you all really think that people don’t see this s—-?’”

Stewart agreed, highlighting how lawmakers are privy to a level of insider knowledge that directly feeds their trading strategies. He pointed out that members of Congress have access to critical information through their committee positions, giving them an unfair advantage in the market.

“You run the casino!” he exclaimed, underscoring the systemic nature of the problem.

Ocasio-Cortez wasn’t finished. She called out the prevailing narrative that only Republicans are tainted by corruption, especially when it comes to money and influence.

“And then we’re supposed to act like money only corrupts Republicans?” she said. “Give me a f—— break!”

Her pointed words reflected her ongoing commitment to holding both parties accountable for their actions and calling out corruption wherever she sees it.

This isn’t the first time the progressive lawmaker has raised such issues. Ocasio-Cortez has repeatedly used her platform to highlight the dangers of unchecked power in Washington. Back in October 2024, she and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz took to Twitch to address another controversial topic: comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s offensive comments at a Donald Trump rally in New York. Hinchcliffe made a joke about Puerto Rico, referencing it as a “floating island of garbage,” a comment Ocasio-Cortez found deeply troubling, especially given her Puerto Rican heritage.

Upon hearing the joke, Walz immediately asked, “Who is that?” to which AOC replied, “I actually think that’s Tony Hinchcliffe, which is super disappointing.”

She went on to explain how the treatment of Puerto Rico often reflects broader societal attitudes toward marginalized communities. “It’s super upsetting to me; my family is from Puerto Rico, I’m Puerto Rican,” she said. “The thing that is so messed up that I wish more people understood is that the things that they do in Puerto Rico are a testing ground for the policies and the horrors that they then unveil in working-class communities across the United States.”

For Ocasio-Cortez, these issues are personal—her advocacy stems from her lived experience, and she doesn’t mince words when calling out what she sees as hypocrisy, corruption, and the exploitation of vulnerable communities. Whether it’s the unchecked trading of stocks in Congress or the disparaging comments made by public figures, she continues to push for greater accountability, not just from Republicans, but from her own party as well.
