BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Former One Direction singer Liam Payne died on Wednesday after falling from the third story of his hotel in Buenos Aires, local police confirmed.
Police said they were notified of an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol” and were called to the scene. They later confirmed the death of the 31-year-old.
Payne rose to global fame as part of the pop band One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson.
The boy band finished in third place on The X Factor UK in 2010 but the group broke up in 2016 as its members pursued solo careers.
Payne first met Cheryl Cole, whom he began officially dating in 2016, on The X Factor UK. They broke up in 2018 and share one child together, Bear Grey Payne.
