ABC Pulls ‘The Bachelorette’ Season Starring Taylor Frankie Paul Amid Abuse Allegations Fallout

The network’s decision followed the resurfacing of a 2023 video that show’ Paul involved in a violent altercation with her ex-partner, Dakota Mortensen.

ABC has abruptly canceled the upcoming season of The Bachelorette featuring Taylor Frankie Paul, shelving the already-filmed installment just days before its scheduled premiere and sending shockwaves through the reality TV industry.

The network’s decision followed the resurfacing of a 2023 video that appears to show Paul involved in a violent altercation with her ex-partner, Dakota Mortensen. The footage, which circulated widely online in recent days, reignited scrutiny over a case that had already resulted in Paul’s arrest and legal consequences.

“In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of ‘The Bachelorette’ at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family,” Disney said in its statement.

A spokesperson for Paul said she is “very grateful for ABC’s support as she prioritizes her family’s safety and security. After years of silently suffering extensive mental and physical abuse as well as threats of retaliation, Taylor is finally gaining the strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm.”

Paul “is currently exploring all of her options, seeking support, and preparing to own and share her story,” the rep added.

The video depicts Paul striking Mortensen and throwing objects during the incident, which allegedly occurred in the presence of a child. The renewed attention comes amid an ongoing domestic violence investigation involving both parties, with each side making allegations against the other.

Paul, a social media influencer and star of Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, had been positioned as a bold, unconventional choice to lead the dating series. Her casting marked a departure from tradition, as she was the first lead not previously featured within The Bachelor franchise.

But the gamble quickly unraveled.

The controversy has not only derailed the season but also raised broader questions about vetting and decision-making within the franchise. Critics have pointed to Paul’s past legal issues and public controversies, known before filming, as red flags that were overlooked.

The fallout has been swift. Production tied to Paul’s other projects has reportedly been paused, brand partnerships have been cut, and planned promotional appearances have been canceled. Meanwhile, contestants who participated in the shelved season have expressed frustration, with some describing the experience as a lost opportunity after months of filming.

For her part, Paul’s representatives have claimed she has endured abuse and is now focused on protecting herself and her children, while Mortensen has denied those allegations.

The cancellation leaves the future of The Bachelorette uncertain. Once a cornerstone of ABC’s reality lineup, the series now faces renewed scrutiny over its casting practices and long-term viability in the wake of one of its most high-profile controversies.
