LONDON — Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, was arrested on Thursday morning on suspicion of misconduct in public office amid backlash over the revelations found in the Epstein files.
Thames Valley Police, which covers an area in southern England, said it had arrested a 66-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
“As part of the investigation, we have today (19/2) arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office and are carrying out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk,” the statement read.
“The man remains in police custody at this time. We will not be naming the arrested man, as per national guidance,” the statement continued.
The news of an arrest came after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told BBC News that “nobody is above law” when he was asked about Mountbatten-Windsor.
“I think that’s a matter for the police, they will conduct their own investigations, but one of the core principles in our system is that everybody is equal under the law and nobody is above the law,” Starmer said.
Andrew, the brother of King Charles III and son of the late Queen Elizabeth II, had faced scrutiny over his years-long friendship with Epstein, the late convicted sex offender.
