‘Scary Movie 6’ Dominates Box Office With $55M U.S. Opening, $105M Worldwide Debut

Co-written by Marlon, Shawn, Keenan and Craig Wayans, the sequel marks the Wayanses’ return to the franchise.

After weeks of indie horror dominance at the box office, a new movie slashed its way to the top after “Scary Movie 6” won the weekend with with $55 million, according to studio estimates Sunday, easily beating “Masters of the Universe.”

The sixth “Scary Movie” grossed a franchise-best $105.5 million worldwide. The Wayans brothers’ comedy even outdid “Scream 7”, which debuted earlier this year to with $97 million worldwide.

Co-written by Marlon, Shawn, Keenan and Craig Wayans, the sequel marks the Wayanses’ return to the franchise after their departure over creative differences following 2001’s “Scary Movie 2.”

Reviews weren’t good and audience scores were in the middle, but that didn’t stop the $30 million “Scary Movie” from dominating its competition. “Masters of the Universe” made $29.3 million domestically and $25 million worldwide.

A24’s “Backrooms,” last weekend’s top release, slid in its second weekend, dropping 68% with $25.9 million and Focus Features’ “Obsession” grossed $25.6 million in its fourth weekend.

“Obsession,” follows a man who wishes his crush returned his affections, was made for less than $1 million. It’s now grossed $152.1 million domestically and $224.8 million worldwide.

Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” became the studio’s highest-grossing film ever with $898 million globally.
