Celebrity blogger and media personality Perez Hilton remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition and is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days, his family said in a new update.
Hilton, 48, was hospitalized in Miami on Aug. 4 after authorities responded to reports of a person livestreaming an apparent act of self-harm. Emergency responders found Hilton alone at his home and transported him to a hospital for treatment.
In an update released Saturday, Hilton’s family said he experienced significant blood loss and sustained other injuries that will require surgery. They cautioned that his recovery is expected to be a lengthy process.
“Perez’s condition remains serious but stable,” the family said in its statement.
The family also expressed appreciation for the medical professionals treating Hilton and thanked supporters for the messages they have received since his hospitalization.
Hilton’s three children are safe and being cared for, according to the family, which asked that their privacy be respected as Hilton continues receiving treatment.
The hospitalization followed a disturbing livestream on TikTok that prompted viewers to contact authorities out of concern for Hilton’s safety. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies responded to reports involving a man who appeared to be harming himself during a livestream.
Hilton’s TikTok account was subsequently removed from the platform after the incident. Clips from the livestream also circulated elsewhere online, prompting renewed discussion about the spread of graphic content and the responsibilities of social media platforms when users broadcast mental health crises.
An earlier update from Hilton’s family said he was receiving medical care and was able to communicate following his hospitalization.
Born Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., Hilton became one of the most recognizable figures in celebrity gossip during the 2000s through his PerezHilton.com website. He later expanded his career into television, podcasts, books and social media.
His family has indicated that additional updates will be provided when appropriate while asking the public to give Hilton and his children privacy as he begins what they described as a long recovery.
