California Gov. Gavin Newsom confirmed on Sunday that he is considering a potential 2028 presidential run, but would not make a final decision until after next year’s midterms.
Newsom was asked on CBS’ Sunday Morning if he had given any thought to running for president in 2028.
“Yeah, I’d be lying otherwise,” Newsom said. “I’d be lying, and I’m, I can’t do that.”
Newsom said that his focus is on the midterms and helping Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives, saying President Donald Trump’s presidency will “de facto end” if Democrats win in the 2026 midterms.
“Finally, you have rebalanced the system, coequal branch of government begins to assert itself, it appears again,” Newsom said. “If you have a Speaker Johnson, we may have a third term of President Trump, I really believe that.”
Newsom’s comments come just 24 hours after former Vice President Kamala Harris told the BBC that she “possibly” will run for president again in the future.
Harris lost the 2024 Election to now-President Donald Trump after former President Joe Biden decided to step down from his re-election campaign 107 days before Election Day.

Other names rumored to be considering a run include Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Newsom has been a fierce critic of Trump, pushing back on the use of federal deployments and ICE raids in his state.
In March, Newsom launched his “This is Gavin Newsom,” podcast, where he interviewed the late conservative activist, Charlie Kirk. He also had an episode with former Trump adviser Steve Bannon.
