It’s a new year and a new season of The Traitors UK.

The fourth season began on Thursday with host Claudia Winkleman welcoming a brand new cast to the Castle and introducing a cool new twist that even has the viewers guessing.

Claudia revealed a new twist: the secret traitor, whose real identity is a mystery to the players in the castle and even the viewers at home. The secret traitor, who wears a red cloak instead of green, has been granted certain powers, including the ability to decide which players the other traitors are allowed to eliminate.

After the new players were welcomed to the castle, Claudia selected the traitors by walking around the roundtable and tapping them on the shoulder. In the end, she selected Stephen, Hugo, and Rachel. She also selected the mystery secret traitor.

It’s safe to say not everyone was happy about the fourth traitor being in the game. The secret traitor is the only contestant this year who knows every other player’s true identity – including who the other three traitors are.

“I do not require middle management,” said traitor Hugo. “The whole point of being a traitor is having perfect information.”

The new cast includes a former police detective and a crime novelist, as well as a mother and daughter keeping their connection a secret.

Their identity will remain a secret until the other traitors “earn their power back”, Claudia explained.

It was also revealed that Ross and Netty knew each other before the show, meeting years ago. Roxy and Judy are also mother and daughter, with Judy explaining she adopted Roxy when she was four.

As the traitors met in the turret, Claudia revealed to them that the secret traitor has selected Netty, Maz, and James for the first murder.

Who will be the first murdered? Find out when The Traitors continues on Friday 2 January at 20:00 GMT on BBC One and iPlayer.
