SAN ANTONIO — Juan Agudelo’s second consecutive brace lifted San Antonio FC to a 2-1 victory over Phoenix Rising FC at a rainy Toyota Field on Saturday night.
The victory snaps a five-game winless streak for San Antonio.
“Yeah, all this hardship these players have had to experience and endure with a lack of player availability due to injuries and national team call-ups, the guys stayed mentally strong, and they’re so united,” SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina said. “There’s great optimism and belief in that locker room, and they got rewarded tonight.”
A weather delay caused the match to start 50 minutes late but Agudelo opened the scoring for SAFC with a goal in the 39th minute off the feed from Jorge Hernandez, putting the home side up a goal going into the second half.
Phoenix leveled the match after halftime when Federico Varela beat goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega in the 59th minute to make it a 1-1 match.
Agudelo converted a penalty in the 81st minute to give San Antonio the lead for good as the club snapped their winless streak.
