Biden ‘Serious About Prisoner Swap’ For WSJ Reporter Evan Gershkovich

The news comes after national security adviser Jake Sullivan said last week the talks have been ongoing with the Kremlin.

President Joe Biden on Thursday said the United States is looking to seek a prisoner swap between the U.S. and Russia to bring Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich home.

The Story: Speaking at a press conference in Finland, Biden said he is open to bringing Gershkovich and any American that has been wrongly detained in Russia home.

  • I’m serious about a prisoner exchange. I’m serious about doing all we can to free Americans being illegally held in Russia or anywhere else for that matter,” Biden said.
  • “The process is underway,” he added.
  • The Associated Press reported earlier this month that Russia would be open to a prisoner exchange for Gershkovich.
  • The news comes after national security adviser Jake Sullivan said last week the talks have been ongoing with the Kremlin but talks have “not produced a clear pathway to a resolution.”

What it means: Gershkovich has been detained for over 100 days at Moscow’s Lefortovo prison.
