Department Of Education To Lay Off Over Half Of Its Workers

WASHINGTON (Fwrd Axis) — The Education Department on Tuesday announced it plans to cut over half of its staff, firing over 2,100 workers in the Trump administration’s attempt to cut what they claim is “government waste”.

The employees will be notified Tuesday, according to a senior administration official. They will be allowed to return to the office to turn in government property and clean out desks on Wednesday.

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement that the layoffs are the department’s way of reflecting the “commitment to efficiency, accountability, and ensuring that resources are directed where they matter most: to students, parents, and teachers.”

3,000 people work in the Washington area, and nearly 1,000 are staffed in 10 regional offices — making it one of the smallest Cabinet-level federal departments.

The layoffs at the Education Department are the latest in a series of mass firings across the government as part of Elon Musk’s DOGE efforts to quickly reduce the federal workforce.

On the campaign trail, President Donald Trump promised to eliminate the Education Department, labeling the agency as “woke”.

The department oversees billions in funding to help low income students and students with disabilities and manages about $1.5 trillion in student loan debt.
