San Antonio FC Blanks Switchbacks FC To Move Atop League Standings

The victory saw San Antonio leapfrog into first place in the USL Championship’s Western Conference as well as the league standings overall.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Fwrd Axis) — San Antonio FC defeated the Colorado Springs Switchbacks 1-0 at Weidner Stadium on Friday night in a matchup between the top two teams in the Western Conference.

The victory saw San Antonio leapfrog Colorado Springs into first place in the USL Championship’s Western Conference as well as the league standings overall.

Incredibly proud of the team. To come here and keep a clean sheet, against one,” San Antonio FC Head Coach Alen Marcina said. This is one of the best attacking groups in the league, just so proud of the collective … What’s been consistent all year is their mentality.”

Despite Colorado coming out aggressive to begin the match, it was San Antonio who would strike first. Diedie Traore crossed the ball into the box but Colorado’s Matt Mahoney put it in the back of the net for an own-goal, giving the visiting side the lead in the 48th minute.

From there, San Antonio clamped down defensively, allowing just four shots on targets from the Switchbacks. The clean sheet is the seventh of the season for SAFC, tied for the most in the league.

San Antonio goalkeeper Jordan Farr had his sixth clean sheet of the season, leading the Western Conference and tied for second in the league. Due to Farr’s play and SAFC’s defense, they became the first team this season to hold Colorado Springs scoreless.

“This is one of the best team’s in the league,” Marcina said. “They were top of the table before tonight’s match. The other piece I want to note is we conceded about 20 dead ball situations and we kept a clean sheet. That’s something we worked on all week.”

UP NEXT:

San Antonio FC is now 11-3-1 (34 points) and will return to the pitch on Tuesday night when they welcome Tulsa FC to Toyota Field at 8 p.m. airing nationally on ESPN 2.
