MINNEAPOLIS — Three people are dead, including the suspected gunman, and six others were injured after gunfire erupted inside a downtown Minneapolis apartment building Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting unfolded shortly after 4:30 p.m. at a high-rise apartment building at 15 E. Grant St., near the city’s Loring Park neighborhood. Authorities said the scene was later secured and there was no continuing threat to the public.
Police were initially dispatched around 4:36 p.m. following a 911 call reporting that someone had been shot. Additional calls soon came in reporting more gunfire inside the building.
Officers entered the high-rise within minutes and encountered multiple victims before hearing additional shots coming from an upper floor, according to Minneapolis police.
As officers moved toward the gunfire, they encountered what authorities described as a haze that significantly reduced visibility. Two officers were struck by gunfire during the response, while a third officer suffered an injury that was not caused by a gunshot.
One officer was shot in the leg, while another was shot twice in the abdomen, according to authorities. All three injured officers were in stable condition and were expected to recover.
Two victims and suspected shooter killed
Police said one victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Another was transported to a hospital but later died from their injuries.
The suspected gunman was also found dead inside the building, bringing the death toll to three.
Authorities had not publicly identified the shooter or the two victims Wednesday night.
Police also had not officially determined how the suspected gunman died. Local media, citing law enforcement sources, reported that investigators believe the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but that account had not been formally confirmed by Minneapolis police.
Six people were injured in the incident overall, including the three officers. Two officers were wounded by gunfire, while the third suffered another type of injury during the response.
