U.S. Announces New Sanctions On Russia, Targeting Media And Elites

The news comes following President Joe Biden’s virtual meeting with leaders of the G-7 and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

WASHINGTON (Fwrd Axis) — The United States along with the European Union and Group of Seven nations announced on Sunday new sanctions on Russia, targeting the country’s state-controlled media, elites, and financing.

The news comes following President Joe Biden’s virtual meeting with leaders of the G-7 and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Today, on 8 May, we, the Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7), alongside Ukraine and the wider global community, commemorate the end of the Second World War in Europe and the liberation from fascism and the National Socialist reign of terror, which caused immeasurable destruction, unspeakable horrors, and human suffering,” the leaders of the G-7 said in a joint statement.

A senior administration said the sanctions will target television stations Joint Stock Company Channel One Russia, Television Station Russia-1, and Joint Stock Company NTV Broadcasting Company. The official said these stations are the largest recipients of foreign revenue, which feeds back into the Russian state.

The U.S. also announced they are prohibiting U.S. individuals from providing accounting, trust, and corporate formation, or management consulting services to anyone in the Russian Federation.

The leaders of the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada also announced the banning of Russian oil imports and vowed to work with the United States to ensure the flow of global energy supplies. Back in March, the Biden administration announced the banning of Russian oil imports.

“President Zelenskyy underlined the strong resolve of Ukraine to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the leaders said. “He stated that Ukraine’s ultimate aim is to ensure the full withdrawal of Russia’s military forces and equipment from the entire territory of Ukraine and to secure its ability to protect itself in the future and thanked G7 members for their support.”

“In the coming weeks, we will step up our collective short-term financial support to help Ukraine close financing gaps and deliver basic services to its people, while also developing options — working with the Ukrainian authorities and international financial institutions — to support long-term recovery and reconstruction,” they added.
