SAN ANTONIO (Fwrd Axis) — San Antonio FC goalkeeper Cristian Bonilla has announced his retirement from professional soccer, effective immediately, the club announced Thursday.
Bonilla has started all three of SAFC’s matches in the 2022 season, earning a perfect 3-0 record while making nine saves and posting a clean sheet in the season-opening win over Detroit City FC on March 12.
“First and foremost, I’d like to express my appreciation and gratitude to all San Antonio FC fans, for the way you welcomed me the past few months,” Bonilla said in a statement. “I’ve made the decision to retire from professional soccer due to personal reasons. I’m very grateful to everyone here and I leave very happy to have been a part of such a beautiful city and wonderful club. I wish everyone at SAFC the very best, and will continue to support the team that I believe can earn a USL Championship title this season.”
San Antonio will now turn to either Jordan Farr or Matthew Cardone to be in the net with Bonilla’s departure. SAFC will return to action on Saturday night against Phoenix Rising FC from Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m.
