The Secret Service has launched an investigation into the cocaine that was found in the West Wing of the White House, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed Wednesday.
The Story: A white powder was found Sunday evening in a small bag in a “heavily traveled area” of the West Wing and prompted an evacuation of the building.
- Jean-Pierre said during a press briefing Wednesday the Secret Service is investigating how the illegal substance got into the White House.
- “We will take any action that is appropriate and warranted, pending the outcome of the Secret Service,” Jean-Pierre told reporters.
President Joe Biden along with first lady Jill Biden and their family members were at Camp David over the weekend and did not arrive back at the White House until Tuesday morning.
Deeper dive: A formal lab test of the powder came back positive for cocaine, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Wednesday.
