Biden To Announce Support For Major Supreme Court Reform

Two major changes would include term limits for the justices, as well as an ethics code for the court.

President Joe Biden is set to announce major reforms to the Supreme Court, a move that would make him the first sitting president in generations to support changes to the nation’s highest court.

According to those briefed on the matter, two major changes would include term limits for the justices, as well as an ethics code for the court. Democratic lawmakers and groups have called on Biden to make changes since he took office.

The President is also considering a constitutional amendment that would reverse the historic ruling from the court that gave presidents immunity.

The Washington Post first reported Biden’s plans to support the changes.

Progressives have been calling for changes to the Supreme Court but Biden has taken a more cautious approach to the court. This comes after controversies over ethics and transparency among some of the justices, including conservative Justices Thomas and Samuel Alito.

When asked about a second Trump presidency and what it would mean for the Supreme Court in an interview with BET News’ Ed Gordon, Biden said it would mean more radical future appointments.

“There’s probably gonna be two more appointments to the court. There’s probably two people who are going to resign – uh resign, retire,” Biden said. “Just imagine – if he has two more appointments on that, what that means forever.”
