UIW Falls Short In El Paso To Open 2023 Season

UIW’s defense struggled to contain the Miners’ run game, allowing over 300 yards rushing on the ground.

EL PASO — The Incarnate Word Cardinals opened a new era of football with a 28-14 loss to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners at the Sun Bowl on Saturday night.

The Story: After a record-setting 2022 season, the Cardinals opened the new season on Saturday with a new head coach, quarterback, and a revamped squad.

  • Zach Calzada got the start at quarterback, finishing with 245 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
  • Calzada connected on a 34-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Porter, putting UIW up 7-0 in the first quarter.
  • Tre Siggers 17 yards on three drives to give the Cardinals a 14-7 lead in the second quarter.

Ground issues: UIW’s defense struggled to contain the Miners’ run game, allowing over 300 yards rushing on the ground.

Up next: UIW is now 0-1 on the season and will return to the field next Saturday when they face Northern Colorado State (0-1) at 3 p.m.
