PITTSBURGH (Fwrd Axis) — Hours after a Pennsylvania bridge collapsed, President Joe Biden walked in the snowy conditions to observe the damage, which was evidence supporting the need for the $1 trillion infrastructure law he was in town to promote.
The bridge collapsed around 6 a.m., leaving a bus dangling and gas lines along the side of the bridge ruptured.
“It’s a miracle, Mr. President,” an officer said.
The Associated Press reported Friday that rescuers had to rappel over 150 feet and formed a human chain to help those who were still on the bus when the collapse occurred.
Thankfully, the bridge collapse resulted in no deaths and showed Biden first-hand why his infrastructure law was so important. Speaking later at a manufacturing research and development center, the President vowed money from the infrastructure law would help rebuild the collapsed bridge.
“We’ve got to move,” he said. “We don’t need headlines that say someone was killed when the next bridge collapses.”
Biden used the opportunity to discuss his Build Back Better agenda, which includes health care subsidies, and climate change initiatives. The package has stalled in Congress with Democrats fearing it will not get passed but the President said at his press conference last week that he wants to pass the bill “in chunks”.
“We know how to ease the pressure on families,” he said Friday. “We can afford these investments by making sure the wealthiest just pay a little bit.”
In town to promote his infrastructure law, Biden vowed the money from the package will go to fix the collapsed bridge and says he doesn’t want to see a situation like this happen again.
The President also touted the $857 million that will be used to rebuild the Montgomery Locks and Dam on the Ohio River in Beaver County.
“We don’t need headlines that someone was killed,” he said. “We are gonna rebuild that bridge and every other bridge. … That’s how we are going to build another America.”
