President Joe Biden on Friday is expected to announce a plan to lower healthcare costs for Americans in an effort to improve their health insurance.

Making the news: Biden is set to give remarks Friday afternoon on his healthcare agenda, focusing on cracking down on “junk fees,” prescription drug costs, and cutting healthcare costs.

  • The administration plans to announce limitations to “junk” insurance plans, which include short-term policies that can deny basic coverage after an individual leaves their place of employment for another.
  • Biden will also announce guidance on rules against surprise billing, according to a facts sheet released by the White House.
  • The president is also expected to tout previous achievements in lowering healthcare costs, most notably allowing Medicare to negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs and a $35 monthly price cap on insulin.

A closer look: With inflation remaining a top concern for voters ahead of the 2024 election, look for Biden to emphasize how his policies have helped families save money and manage their expenses.

The point: Republican lawmakers have criticized Biden’s policies, saying they have only added to the problems American families are facing.

  • In 2018, the Trump Administration adopted regulations to let people stay on short-term insurance plans for 12 months despite critics saying it did not protect people with preexisting conditions.
  • With the president traveling out of the country next week, the White House is hoping the actions being announced Friday will begin to change the minds of voters on the economy.
