Ed Markey Defeats Seth Moulton In Massachusetts Senate Primary

Markey, 80, secured the Democratic nomination as he seeks another term in the Senate, overcoming a challenge from the 47-year-old Moulton.

BOSTON — U.S. Sen. Ed Markey won Massachusetts’ Democratic Senate primary Tuesday, defeating Rep. Seth Moulton and delivering a significant victory for an incumbent whose nearly five decades in Congress became a central issue in the campaign.

Markey, 80, secured the Democratic nomination as he seeks another term in the Senate, overcoming a challenge from the 47-year-old Moulton, who built much of his campaign around the argument that Massachusetts — and the Democratic Party more broadly — needed a new generation of leadership.

Instead, Democratic voters chose experience and Markey’s longstanding progressive record.

“Massachusetts needs a senator who stands up and fights back, a senator who never forgets who they are fighting for,” Markey told supporters in his victory speech. “That has been the mission of my life, and it always will be.”

The result gives Markey another victory over a younger Massachusetts Democrat who attempted to make the case for a changing of the guard.

Six years ago, Markey defeated then-Rep. Joe Kennedy III in a closely watched Democratic primary. That campaign helped cement Markey’s standing with the party’s progressive wing and introduced him to a new generation of younger voters despite his decades-long career in Washington.

This time, Moulton made the generational argument more explicit.

The Marine veteran and six-term congressman repeatedly pointed to Markey’s age and tenure in office, arguing Democrats needed leaders better positioned to address emerging challenges. Moulton also called for age limits for members of Congress.

But Markey sought to turn the debate away from age and toward ideology, portraying Moulton as more moderate and arguing that progressive priorities mattered more than a candidate’s birth year.

The primary became one of the more closely watched Democratic contests of the 2026 midterm cycle because it captured a larger debate taking place inside the party.

Across the country, younger Democrats have challenged veteran incumbents with calls for political turnover and frustration with the party establishment. Some of those challengers have succeeded this year, including in congressional primaries in New York, Colorado and Michigan. Massachusetts voters, however, chose to stick with their longtime senator.

“Generational change isn’t about compromising, to do the small things better,” Markey said Tuesday. “It’s about fighting to do the big things best.”
