Supreme Court Rejects Trump’s Request To Withhold Tax Returns To House Democrats

The committee has not yet said how quickly they would be able to get access to the documents.

WASHINGTON (Fwrd Axis) — The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected former President Donald Trump‘s request to withhold his tax returns to House Democrats, making it likely the documents could find their way to the lawmakers’ desk before Republicans take control of the chamber in the new year.

The committee has not yet said how quickly they would be able to get access to the documents. However, Republicans are expected to withdraw the request once they take control of the chamber in the new year.

Donald Trump has refused to make his tax returns public amid questions about his business dealings. The court has already rejected similar requests from the former president.

House Democrats as well as the Biden administration had urged the court to reject Trump’s request, saying it served a legislative purpose.

“These documents are vital to meeting the House’s Constitutional mandate: guarding the public interest, defending our national security, and holding our public officials to account,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. “The House looks forward to promptly receiving and reviewing these documents.”

Pelosi also called on the House to “enact legislation requiring Presidents and candidates for President to disclose their tax returns.”

Trump has repeatedly refused to release his tax returns since the 2016 presidential campaign when he broke the norm for both Democrats and Republicans who had released their financial information in the past.

The news comes amid the Trump organization on trial over allegations it was involved in a 15-year scheme to compensate top executives and help them avoid paying taxes. Trump has not fared well with Supreme Court decisions despite the court holding a 6-3 majority, including three justices he himself nominated.

Most recently, the court last month rejected Trump’s request that a special master be allowed to review classified papers that were part of the FBI’s raid on his Mar-a-Lago property.
